TMCHalftone

Generates a halftone pattern on a layer

Turns a layer into a halftone grid pattern, like manga or pop-art dots or an LED sign. The dots can scroll or shake, so it also works as a moving background.

Key features

01

6 dot shapes

Choose from Circle, Square, Diamond, Line, and Sparkle, or use Custom Layer to stamp any layer you like as the halftone dots.

02

A moving dot grid

With Scroll Mode in Motion, the dots flow along rows or columns. Position Jitter, Scale Jitter, Rotation Jitter, and Cell Rotation in Pattern break up the grid, and turning on Turbulent makes the whole grid ripple.

03

6 Color Modes

Comes with 6 Color Modes (Monochrome, Source Color, RGB Screens, CMYK Screens, Duotone, Random Gradient), 12 Duotone presets, and per-channel screen angles.

04

Tile Background

Tile Background lays down a checkerboard, stripes, or 4 texture layers to build a grid UI or an LED sign screen.

Quick start

Follow these steps in order the first time.

  1. Apply Effect › TMC › TMC Halftone to a layer or an adjustment layer.
  2. Choose the dot shape in Shape, and set up the grid with Cell Size and Angle.
  3. In Color Mode, pick a look: black-and-white manga, source color, CMYK print, or duotone.
  4. For movement, set Scroll Mode in Motion to Rows or Columns, and turn on Turbulent in Pattern.

Practical tips

  • To stamp dots in a shape of your choice, set Shape to Custom Layer and assign a heart or logo layer to Custom Shape Layer.
  • For a real printed look, use CMYK Screens and give each plate a different angle in Channel Angles.
  • Dots are drawn in transparent areas too, and semi-transparent edges are handled so no ink band forms around them.

Where to use it

  • Character illustrations styled like a manga panel
  • Titles styled like an LED sign or dot-matrix display
  • Pop-art backgrounds and loop elements

Pairs well with

Technical notes

  • GPU-accelerated with OpenCL on Windows and Metal on macOS, on top of parallel CPU processing.
  • Supports 8 · 16 · 32 bpc and Multi-Frame Rendering, and motion blur applies to animated Angle, Cell Size, and Offset.
